I had to create a patchwork block for a charity event .Only had 2 days to finish it. So after going through my pile of fabrics , came up with an idea to use men silk handkerchief, the remnants of my daughters white blouse and for the applique I cut out this gorgeous bright flowers . With that I was ready to start my block.
I wanted to do a simple patchwork. An overly complicated design would drown the apllique. First step is decide on the size; mine is 12"x 12". Cut 2 squares of white fabric 8"x 8" to make 4 triagles.
I always give more allowance because I can cut off the rest once I have finish attaching all the blocks.
This is how I attach the triangles to the square. Attach them on opposite side of the square.
Now I am attaching the flower applique to the silk hanky by hand stiching them in place. I could have used the fabric spray but since I am working with 2 different type of fabric textures I didn't want to waste time experimenting.
I am going to apply satin stich all around the edge of the flower. To match the color of the flower, I have selected corn yellow . The wide open foot made it easy for me to know where I am going with the stich.
This is the Janome Horizon . I am selecting the zigzag stich no 10. I brought down the width and the height to 3.0 and 0.35 respectively. Other sewing machine will have their own witdth and height settings.
This is the finish product. One more to go.
It was 2 in the morning , I did not take any shots on how to attach the border. Anyway the last part is to sew hidden stich by hand.
This is the final step. The hidden stich have to be sewn by hand.
Fruit of my labour.
Happy Labour day folks!
